Jumpers’ Bumpers 12th February

We have some great news for all of our loyal racegoers! Following recent abandonments,and with the current cold snap set to continue, the British Horseracing Authority have programmed an additional fixture of Jumpers’ Bumpers to take place at Southwell Racecourse on Sunday, February 12th. More importantly, thanks to our friends at Blue Square Bet, admission to the fixture is totally FREE to enter the Grandstand, and just £5.00 in the Premier Enclosure.

The seven race card will be made up of six events primarily aimed at Steeple Chasers and Hurdlers, plus a Standard Open National Hunt Flat race.

The Track will be prepared to broadly replicate turf conditions on the ‘slow side of good’. So Roderick and his team will be busy over the next few days preparing the track!

Beer Festival Week

Its finally here, the 2011 Southwell Beer Festival! To get you in the mood, we have found some interesting beer related poems! The festival is running on Friday 9th, Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th December. With ale, racing and live music at the end of the day, what more can you ask for! For the event we have an extra special offer. For just £20.00 each, you and a party of 8 will get entry the racecourse, five 1/2 pints of ale, racecard and also a pork or beef roll!

If you're coming along for just the racing, tickets start from just £11.00 for Grandstand entry, or £16.00 for the Premier Enclosure.

Awards delight for Southwell Racecourse

Southwell Racecourse was delighted to be named as winners ofthe Training and Staff Development Award at the 2011 Newark Business Awards. The annual awards took place at Kelham Hall on Tuesday 29^thNovember in association with the Newark Advertiser

This Training and Staff Development Award was sponsored byNewark College with the judges looking for the company that demonstrated themost outstanding excellence in its approach to workforce development. AllCompanies entered into this category had to demonstrate a clear andstructured approach to staff recruitment, training, retention and development.

The judges were also keen to see evidence of specific employee developmentactivities or strategies that had been successful in the organisation, and theimpact they have had on the business, e.g. reduced staff turnover, improvedretention, reduced recruitment costs, and contribution to business growth andprofits.

David Roberts, Managing Director of Southwell Racecoursesaid "This wonderful achievement is entirely down to our highly regarded staff, embracing opportunities and consistently striving to be the best that they can be. We are both surprised and delighted and see this award as external verification that we as a company have a very effective approach to achieving business sustainability through people and the personal growth of our staff."

New Events Launched

As mentioned in the previous blog post, November and December are looking extremely busy for us, and we now have some extra events and offers to keep you entertained!

Second, we have the fantastic Pippa Rees & Sally Longden, aka Stick and Ribbon at the racecourse on the 22nd November. You will have the chance to come and view the latest styles from the Stick & Ribbon Autumn/Winter collection, as well as finding out how to find the perfect Christmas party dress for you. If you have always wanted some 'real' advice on what really suits you, then come and along and find out more. Stick & Ribbon will be giving a fun & informative style talk at 12.30pm, followed by your chance to shop till you drop! Jewellery and accessories will also be on show, so you can get some Christmas pressie shopping done too! You can visits Stick & Ribbon in the Paddock Marquee. Third and finally- Southwell 2011 Beer Festival has been launched! The 3 day event running on the 9th, 10th and 11th of December will showcase the best of British Brewing. Fashion, Glamour, Racing and a Record Crowd at Ladies Day!

Yesterday was the sixth annual Advertiser Group Ladies Day at Southwell Racecourse and what a day it was! Records had already been broken for advance ticket sales for the event before the gates opened and more people turned up on the day than ever before! More than 6,100 people enjoyed an afternoon packed with fashion, glamour and thrilling racing.

The weather was perfect and racegoers made the most of the lawns and picnic areas enjoying great food, drink and entertainment all afternoon.

The Jacques Vert fashion show at 12.30pm attracted a huge crowd with the catwalk display featuring the coming seasons latest designs for occasion and evening wear.

Racing started at 2.15pm and it was an action packed card with 7 thrilling races. During the afternoon our panel from the Advertiser and Jacques Vert visited all enclosures to select 10 finalists for each of the 3 competitions, Best Shoes, Best Hat and Best Dressed Lady.

Straight after the last race the 3 competitions were held on the main stage behind the Grandstand and the judges had a very difficult decision as all the ladies looked fantastic. Best Shoes was won by Susan Filep from Southwell, the Best Hat award went to Tez Fahey from Grantham and Best Dressed Lady of the day was awarded to Debbie Grogan from Sheffield.

Live entertainment from superb band Battle of the Divas completed the day with most racegoers staying to enjoy the late afternoon sunshine and fantastic live music.

Countdown to the highlight on the Southwell social calendar

With just 8 days to go until Southwell Ladies Day on Sunday 14th August bookings for tickets are flooding in. Today we have passed the 4,000 marker for pre-sales which is fantastic. Ladies Day at Southwell has become an event not to be missed in recent years and this year is no exception.

Ladies Day is without a doubt our most popular fixture of the season and is held in association with the Newark Advertiser. Ladies are encouraged to dress up and compete for the prizes on offer for 'Best Dressed Lady', 'Best Hat' and 'Best Shoes'.

In addition to the thrilling racing the day will be packed with exciting entertainment once the gates open at 11.45am starting with the Jacques Vert Ladies Fashion Show at 12.30pm and will continue after racing with live music from Battle Of The Divas so you can dance away the rest of the early evening.

All ladies who PRE BOOK their tickets will receive a complimentary drink upon arrival at the racecourse on the day.

Nathan Corden, Head of Commercial Development at Southwell Racecourse said "we are thrilled to have reached 4,000 pre-sales but we have room for more! Pre-booking tickets is advisable as it is such a busy day for us and of course ladies who pre-book tickets receive a complimentary drink. This year we have extended our hospitality capacity as demand is always so high, we have some space left in our marquees for those guests wishing to dine but pre-booking is essential as availability is limited"

Broad Appeal Race Night raises £2,607.22!

The Broad Appeal Race Night was held on Tuesday 12th July and supporters of this fantastic charity were invited to join the Broad's in their home town for a great night of racing.

Supporters of the Appeal, which was founded by former England cricketer Chris Broad and his two children, England fast bowler Stuart and England team performance analyst Gemma, purchased tickets for the racing with 100% of the ticket price going to the charity.

In addition to the selling tickets the charity also sponsored 3 of the evenings races to help raise awareness about Motor Neurone Disease and funds for the appeal.

The night was a huge success and including ticket sales, sponsorship and bucket collections on the evening a total of £2,607.22 was raised.

Nathan Corden, Head of Commercial Development at Southwell Racecourse said "we are thrilled with the amount raised for the Broad Appeal, it has been a pleasure to work with the fundraising team and we look forward to supporting the Broad Appeal in future. There is of course a great local connection with Chris and Stuart both playing for Nottinghamshire during their careers. The support for this cause from the local area has been fantastic.".

Record Crowd at Family Fun Day

Family Fun Day, in association with Chad Newspapers, on Sunday 10th July was a great value day out with families enjoying a variety of FREE entertainment.

Racegoers enjoyed 8 races and the fantastic FREE entertainment for children included a large bouncy castle, a soft play area, an unlimited candy floss stall, a gladiator duel, bouncy boxing, a circus workshop and a bungee run.

Scooby Doo proved very popular all afternoon!

The late afternoon rain shower didn't spoil the mood and many of the crowd stayed to enjoy the live entertainment from the fantastic Take That Experience on our outdoor stage.

This festival meeting attracted more that 5000 people - a record for our Family Fun Day, thank you to everyone who attended. We hope to see you all at our next festival date - Ladies Day on 14th August. Click here for details.

Macmillan Centenary Race Evening Tuesday 5th July

Come racing at Southwell Racecourse on Tuesday, 5th July and enjoy superb live music following racing from The Joe Strange Band and help MacMillan Cancer Support celebrate its Centenary. MacMillan Cancer Support aims to improve the lives of everyone affected by cancer, providing medical, emotional and financial support and pushing for better cancer care. They reply entirely on donations and receive no government funding.

Ask around and most people will have either had direct help from them or know someone who has. Last year alone, their local benefits advice services reached an estimated 63,000 people and leveraged more than £101m of benefits for people affected by cancer.
Amazingly, MacMillan Cancer Support is actually celebrating its Centenary this year - not a bad milestone for a charity that was set up with a £10 birthday gift by Douglas MacMillan after his father had died of cancer.

The volunteers groups in Nottinghamshire have made it their aim to ensure that £2011 is a land-mark year for MacMillan in Nottinghamshire. To this end they have organised a number of special events throughout the year to help celebrate this important anniversary and raise funds to help the charity continue to deliver its incredible services.

If Ascot and the Derby have whetted your appetite for a trip to the races, then the next major event will definitely be the one for you! The MacMillan Centenary Race Meeting is being held at Southwell Racecourse on the evening of Tuesday 5th July. The event will have six live horse races, with the first starting at 6.40 p.m. Perfect for an evenings entertainment after work! Food and beverages will be available throughout the evening and the under 18's will be able to attend FREE of charge.

Southwell Racecourse have very generously allowed the MacMillan Fundraising Teams an allocation of Grandstand Enclosure tickets (£11 per ticket) which MacMillan are able to pass on to supporters for only £6 - a massive saving and a 100% donation to MacMillan.
