Racing Legends In Action This Week

We have a busy week at Southwell this week as there are three meetings to get stuck into with a jumps card on Tuesday night, Flat racing on Wednesday afternoon and a transferred fixture from Wolverhampton, also on the Fibresand on Thursday afternoon.

Some of the leading lights of racing are making the trip to Nottinghamshire as well, with a plethora of top riding talent on show particularly on Tuesday evening, where 19 times champion jump jockey AP McCoy comes for 6 rides. Richard Johnson is also riding alongside top young riders Sam Twiston-Davies, Trevor Whelan and the 2012/13 champion conditional Gavin Sheehan.

Former Champion trainer Nicky Henderson has two runners, Reverb in the 6.40 with Jeremiah McGrath in the plate and Quiet Candid in the closing bumper, which is the mount of AP McCoy. Grand National winning trainer Dr Richard Newland is also busy with two runners, and must surely go close with Slim Pickens in the “National Hunt” Maiden hurdle at 6.40.

We also welcome back some recent course winners with Sir Lynx in the 6.10, Queen Olivia at 7.10 and Surf And Turf lining up in the 8.15. There is also live music after racing from Richie Muir, check out some of his covers on his website:

Onto Wednesday, and Stand Guard returns in the 4.00 race and will be ridden for the first time in two and a half years by Stevie Donohoe, a jockey in form at present. Stand Guard has won 26 all weather races, six of which have been here on the Fibresand. This is more than any other horse which puts him firmly in the history books. There is however some potentially stiff opposition here in the shape of Dynastic, who has won his last two races here at Southwell and is only half the age of Stand Guard at five years old. But Omnipresent could be the biggest threat if taking to Fibresand for trainer David O’Meara, who had an across card 4-timer on Saturday afternoon.

There is also a really good 0-80 handicap featuring recent impressive course winner Abi Scarlet and Repetition taking on past course winners Piceno, Royal Holiday and Two Moons.

The declarations aren't in yet for Thursday's transferred fixture from Wolverhampton, but there are a few entries worthy of a mention. John Gosden, who has an incredible 39% strike rate at the racecourse over the past 5 seasons, has 1 in the Class 4 mile, owned by Lady Rothschild, who most notably also owned Nathaniel, Mince and Great Heavens. The final race of the three days included General Tufto in the entries, the 9 year old has a case of seconditis, having been runner up on his last 6 starts, 4 of which here, however he does know how to get his head in front on the Fibresand having won here 11 times!
