Good Friday: A Huge Success

There were race meetings on Good Friday for the first time last week with a good meeting at Musselburgh up in Scotland alongside a very good card for the All Weather Championship finals day at Lingfield Park, where some of the top riders on the circuit were shown to very good effect.

Ryan Moore has started off the season very well and is taking full advantage of Richard Hughes being on the injured list, and his ride on Grandeur in the Easter Classic, the main race of the afternoon with £100,000 on offer in win and placed prize money, was truly top class. In a very tactical affair where they didn’t go much of a pace through the first half of the contest, Moore was always well positioned to strike aboard the Jeremy Noseda favourite and pounced inside the final furlong to just beat Dick Doughtywylie for the in-form John Gosden and William Buick combination.

Paul Hanagan was also in attendance to ride short priced favourite Ertijaal in the three year old championship final for trainer William Haggas and boss Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum. This lightly raced colt is by no means flashy in the way he goes about his business but he keeps beating some  very nice horses with a bit up his sleeve, always leaving the impression we haven’t seen the best of him yet, a sentiment his trainer certainly concurs with. He is likely to have a crack at the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket next weekend.

As for Racing at Southwell last week, we had an all weather card on Tuesday and a jumps evening fixture on Wednesday which was the first of our music evenings of the summer. On Tuesday, Stand Guard couldn’t make it win number 27 on the All-Weather when he found Back Burner too strong in the seller.

On Wednesday it was all about some of the top young conditional riders as Trevor Whelan performed miracles to win on Daliance, Gavin Sheehan won on Horsted Valley in the bumper and Maurice Linehan rode a double aboard Edmaaj and Catching On for boss Jonjo O’Neill.

Our next fixture is tomorrow evening, again over the sticks, and again accompanied by live music after racing, this time from local duo Wildwood, visit www.southwell-racecourse.co.uk or call 01636 814481 for more information and to purchase tickets.
