Racing and racecourse news

It's been a busy week or so at the racecourse, with back to back racing on Tuesday and Wednesday! The past week has seen some brilliant runners and finishes, and with Cheltenham on this week, it was good to see that Cinders and Ashes, a previous winner with us was the first winner at Cheltenham!

Racing news from the past week, Babworth trainer Scott Dixon led home a stable one-two in the Class 4 Membership Of Southwell Gold Club Handicap as Six Wives just got the better of Cadeaux Pearl. Ridden by jockey Robert Winston, 9-2 shot Six Wives showed plenty of speed in the five furlong sprint to pip Ryan Powell on stablemate Cadeaux Pearl by one-and-a-quarter lengths.

Earlier on Thursday’s all-weather card, it was a day for favourites as the first three races went all went to those at the head of the betting. The Brian Ellison-trained Overrule took the seller under a clever Barry McHugh ride, while Only Ten Percent finally got off the mark at the fourth time of asking at Southwell.

The third race of the afternoon, the Class 6 handicap over a mile was won by the even money favourite Pelican Rock for trainer Tom Dascombe and jockey Richard Kingscote.

Promising claimer Luke McNiff once again displayed his riding credentials when doing the steering aboard Jacob McCandles, who edged out Lithograph by two lengths in the Maiden Stakes.

There was almost a shock in the seven furlong handicap when 33-1 chance Nezami was eventually worn down by recent course and distance winner Imprimis Tagula for the Alan Bailey yard.

Only four runners went to post for the final apprentice handicap of the day, but it was top-weight Hunters Belt who ran them into the ground with a fairly comfortable success for jockey Jason Hart.
